A Bloggers Survival Guide: First Year Of Blogging

It’s amazing to think that one year ago today, I shared my very first post on Hello Bexa. In 365 days, I have published 136 posts and had the opportunity to do some pretty awesome things and chat to some pretty awesome people. I wanted to make this post a bit different than just listing everything I’ve done in this first year of blogging (you can see all my posts here). Instead I wanted to acknowledge the fact that yes blogging is cool, but it is incredibly hard at times too.

I want to take this opportunity to share with you a few things I have learned on how to survive in the blogging world. Here goes:

If you want support, be supportive.

This is something I learned pretty quickly. If you want blog comments, go leave blog comments. If you want Twitter followers, go follow people. If you want engagement, go interact. Make the first move and surprise yourself. I was once asked how I got 50 comments on my latest post, there is no secret, I just simply (it took hours) read and left 50 comments on other blogs. In my experience, the majority of bloggers are kind and will happily return the blog love.

You don’t need to follow a set of rules.

The blogging world is packed with great advice, but you don’t need to follow a set of rules to be successful. Just because it’s available doesn’t mean you need to use it. Personally, I don’t schedule tweets, I don’t use Instagram stories, I don’t spend much time on Pinterest and Facebook and so on. If it works for you, great. If not, don’t stress. Focus on what you enjoy rather than trying to be everywhere and do everything.

Make your social media a positive place.

Social media is wonderful for discovering, interacting and supporting fellow bloggers. But it can also be a negative and overwhelming place at times too. Recognise when it’s not making you feel good, stop scrolling and go do something else. Social media should enhance your blogging experience, not hinder it. Find ways to control your social media, rather than letting it control you.

Know when you need a break.

Whether that is a day off from social media or a week or so away from blogging, we all need a rest sometimes. Don’t feel guilty if life gets in the way, it happens. Your blog will still be waiting for you when you return. It’s true that creativity suffers when we are feeling exhausted and stressed. It doesn’t matter if you skip a blog post or relax your schedule. The phrase is overused but seriously, be kind to yourself.

You are going to feel insecure at times.

Unfortunately, comparison and self-doubt come as part of the package of being a blogger. It is inevitable we are going to feel inadequate at times when there are tons of bloggers everywhere, all seemingly doing incredible things, getting fabulous opportunities and striking up amazing friendships. It is easy to feel less than and left out. If you feel like this, accept it is a normal reaction but don’t dwell there for too long. Shake it off and remember people like you, because you are you.

There is space for everyone.

Every single blogger is unique. We each have our own special skills, talents, ways with words, quirks and personalities.  Your voice is just as important as anyone else’s. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and share your passions (even if they are not ‘on trend’). Dare to be different and stand out from the crowd.

Being a blogger is a roller coaster ride of highs and lows, but it is a journey I am excited to be on and I wouldn’t change a thing. Thank you so much to everyone who has connected with me, supported me, been kind and made this such an amazing experience so far. I am forever grateful to all the lovely people I have met along the way and I’m looking forward to see what the next year brings in this crazy blogging world.

What would be in your bloggers survival guide? Feel free to leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you!

These are all great tips, especially the first one. I’ve found that most people can’t expect people to comment on their blogs unless they put in some work themselves, and that includes commenting on other blogs.
I’ve been blogging for over 9 years now. At this point in the game, I’m in the “middle” as far as the hierarchy of blogs. I don’t stress out over numbers, or how often I blog. I also don’t fit into any one niche. I blog about what I want and what I want.
Congrats on your 1 year blogging anniversary!

    • October 20, 2018 / 4:40 pm

Thank you so much for your kind words Terra. That’s a great attitude to have, blogging is so much more fun when we don’t worry about numbers, schedules or niches. Glad you enjoyed the post lovely and congrats on blogging for over 9 years, that’s really impressive! <3 xx

Happy Blogiversary Bexa! I have adored your blog and loved seeing you grow. You have some great content and you’re such a lovely person. Thank-youu for all the support! These are some great tips, I definitely agree with them all and think about them daily when blogging. Without you supporting others, why should others support you? I’ve noticed that a lot on An Ocean Glimmer after participating in Comment Pods recently. If you put the work in, you’ll be rewarded.

Thank you so much Sana! I’m so glad the post has helped and inspired you, that’s so lovely to hear! <3 xx

  4. October 18, 2018 / 8:52 am

Wow, Bexa, in the nicest possible way it seems like you’ve been around for much longer than just one year but Happy Blogiversary! You are without a doubt one of my favourite bloggers, both in terms of content and for how supportive and inspirational you are. I completely agree with you about engagement too, what you put in (and yes, sometimes it does take hours!) you will nearly always get back. If you don’t then try not be bitter about it and just move on. And taking a break from things is soooo important as well, we all need time away and to be able to hit the reset button. These are some great tips and I look forward to reading more of your content and seeing more of Simba – that is the CUTEST pic of him in your first blog post! xxx

    • October 20, 2018 / 5:16 pm

Awww Lisa! You are always so sweet and supportive! And I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you too – you always leave such kind, thoughtful and encouraging words on all my posts which I always appreciate and look forward to reading. That’s such a good point about not feeling bitter if you don’t get anything back, expect nothing then we won’t be disappointed. He he, glad you liked the Simba photo too, I need to take some more recent pics of him. Thanks again lovely! <3 xxx

    I love this post!

Your words should be read by all bloggers before they start blogging because they’d benefit and not take things too seriously. I honestly believe if you enjoy something just do it, I don’t stress about numbers or followers or whether I’ve published a post this week because let’s be honest, we all have lives to live!

A fabulous post, high five to you! 😁

    • October 20, 2018 / 5:19 pm

Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words Sarah! I agree, blogging should be an enjoyable thing and we shouldn’t let numbers, followers or schedules ruin our fun. Glad you enjoyed the post lovely <3 xx

  6. October 18, 2018 / 9:16 am

    Congrats on your year!
Yesterday, I left about 25 facebook groups that I’d joined in the hopes of finding support and ideas. What I actually found was huge amounts of people trying to sell me e-courses and a lot of other people accidentally making me feel very inferior.
I find twitter to be a happy, friendly place, so that’s where I’m staying!
    Holly | http://www.honestlyholly23.com

    • October 20, 2018 / 5:32 pm

Thank you so much Holly! I had a similar experience – I joined up to tons of Facebook groups and found them to be mostly spam. Twitter is where I enjoy most and I hardly go on Facebook anymore! Glad you enjoyed the post <3 xx

Congratulations and happy year blogging anniversary 🎉💕 you have had a great year and have written some amazing posts! I have enjoyed reading your content and so appreciative of your support and kindness online. This post is so lovely and helpful for current and new bloggers. Such useful tips and I need to try and not compare myself and doubt myself or my abilities! Thank you for sharing 💕xxx

Happy blogiversary! Your blog is one of my favourite ‘happy spaces’ on the internet, and this post has just proved why. Be true to yourself, write the things you want to, and don’t do something because you feel like you have to do it. That’s my rules for my blog, and so far it’s kept me on the straight and narrow! Especially supporting others. That is so important.

How the hell are you only a one-year blogger?! There’s some dark magic involved in there somewhere 😉

    • October 20, 2018 / 6:23 pm

He he, thank you! <3 xx

  10. October 18, 2018 / 10:10 am

I didn’t realise you had only been blogging for a year, Bexa! Congratulations and happy anniversary. You’re now an even bigger inspiration to me than before! 😍 I agree with all of this advice, though, especially “if you want support, be supportive.” That’s absolutely crucial if you want to get anywhere. It’s great that posts like this exist – I know reading similar insights really helped me before I started.

Also, this seems like a good opportunity to say thank you for being such a positive role model in the blogging world – you fill it with so much colour and good vibes, and it makes a huge difference. Keep up the great work, and here’s to year two.

    • October 20, 2018 / 6:34 pm

Aww Ruth! You are so sweet! Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words! Same to you girl, you are such a positive, colourful and inspirational blogger, one of my favourites for sure! Thank you again lovely, so glad you enjoyed the post and found it helpful <3 xx

  12. October 18, 2018 / 10:42 am

Congrats on your year of blogging! When I came across your blog I just had to subscribe immediately, I look forward to reading your posts whenever I get an email about it! Some really great advice too, definitely agree with the blog interaction – I spend hours and hours reading other blogs and commenting on them and work super hard, but at the same time it’s something that I love doing, I could read blog posts all day every day to be honest!

    Chloe xx

    • October 22, 2018 / 9:26 am

Thank you so much Chloe! I’m so happy you subscribed, you are so kind and encouraging! I’m the same, it does take a lot of time but I always feel inspired and end up learning so much from my fellow bloggers too, it is always well worth doing. Glad you enjoyed the post lovely! <3 xx

  13. October 18, 2018 / 11:43 am

All of these are so important to keep in mind! Though I admit a few are easier said then done somedays. Blogging is a whirlwind to be sure with highs and lows and everything in between! It’s a journey I wouldn’t trade for anything however and it makes me so happy to see others feeling the same way! Congrats on reaching one year with your blog, i’am sure your second year will be just as amazing!

    • October 22, 2018 / 9:38 am

Thank you so much Kristin! I agree, blogging is such a whirlwind, everything happens so quickly! I’m glad you feel the same way too and thank you for your kind and encouraging words <3 xx

Thank you so much Cora! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post and that’s so true, it’s all about give and take with blogging! <3 xx

  14. October 18, 2018 / 12:31 pm

Congratulations on your one year blogging anniversary, and for sticking to it for this long. You’ve made such a positive impact on the blogging community, and I personally love seeing your uplifting words of encouragement on my Twitter feed all the time!

You’ve mentioned some really important points in this article. So many people think support and engagement will come straight away when you start blogging, but the truth is, blogging is about supporting one another and treating others like your friends as opposed to competition. I’ve made so many blogging friends through reading their blogs, returning comments, and then connecting on social media!

I also love the point you made about the importance of taking time out if and when you need it. It’s so difficult to relax when you feel like you could be doing something blogging-related, but it’s so important to take time for yourself. Although for a lot of us blogging is a hobby, it still takes a lot of work to make something of, so taking time to do other things or come off social media and relax is SO important!

Sorry for leaving such a long comment on your blog. Here’s to the next year of your blog!

    • October 18, 2018 / 1:21 pm

This is such a well thought out reply/comment

    • October 22, 2018 / 10:13 am

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment Rebekah. I really appreciate your lovely words and I’m so pleased you enjoy seeing my tweets on Twitter too, that really makes me smile! That’s so true, the blogging community is such a wonderful place and people are mostly super friendly and happy to return the blog love and support. I know what you mean about taking time to relax when you should be doing something blogging related. I took the weekend off blogging but still had lots to so, I’m so glad I did though as I’m feeling refreshed and ready for a new week. Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words lovely, you are so sweet <3 xx

  15. October 18, 2018 / 1:20 pm

Happy Blogoversary! This post is amazing, I might print it off and stick it on the wall next to my laptop to remind myself of points 5 and 6! As a newbie blogging feels so overwhelming. Thanks for the great tips =)

    • October 22, 2018 / 10:44 am

Thank you so much Hayley! Aww yay, that is awesome you are going to print this off, that has really made me happy! Blogging is really overwhelming at first but keep it up girl, you are doing amazingly <3 xx

  16. October 18, 2018 / 1:24 pm

Yes there is a space for everyone. Thanks for the reassurance
The first year is really hard to get a routine down and since most of us start a blog as a hobby with a full time job, socialising with other bloggers us the hardest thing about it. but nevertheless you reap what you sow !

    • October 22, 2018 / 11:01 am

Thank you so much Amanda! I know what you mean, there is never enough hours in the day to do everything when you are a blogger! Keeping up with a routine can be hard at times, we just gotta be easy on ourselves if we need some time off. Glad you enjoyed the post lovely <3 xx

Congrats on a year, that’s so exciting! I am all for taking breaks, especially as a full-time student, it can get hard to keep up with both. I think a lot of people worry about taking breaks when it can be a really positive thing. I used to get insecure because there are so many bloggers and I’m just a little college blogger with less than 100 views per day, but you’re right there is space for everyone and I’m just really happy that those 100 people decided to read my blog today. Love this post and congrats again!

Thank you so much for the kind words Megan! I agree, breaks are so important when it comes to blogging especially when you are busy with studying too. I think your blog is great, keep up the fab work lovely! <3 xx

  18. October 18, 2018 / 3:08 pm

I can’t believe you’ve only been blogging for a year. You’ve done amazing! I’ve been blogging longer and I always come by your blog and feel inspired and in awe of everything here.

I love all your tips. I definitely find that leaving comments helps, though I haven’t had much luck with people leaving them in return and it was taking up far too much of my time to go through so many blogs to have nobody swing by mine and leave love back. I now just stick to a select few blogs that actually return comments (yours being one of the few!)

The tip about not following rules is a great one. I thought I needed to schedule tweets to be successful, but I found it actually turned people away from following me.. so now I just post when I can and tweet out my blog posts when I can. I’m not as active on social media as I’d like to be, but anything I want to say really is said on my blog.

I always feel insecure about my blog in comparison to other blogs.. but that’s human nature to compare I guess. I need to stop being so hard on myself. If I look back at my first posts compared to now I’ve come a long way..

Thank you for writing this though, I especially needed to hear all of these things today. ♥

    • October 22, 2018 / 12:40 pm

Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. It is a shame you haven’t have much luck with people returning comments, I usually participate in comment swaps on Twitter which seems to work well. I’m glad you feel the same about not following rules, scheduling tweets sounds like hard work to me! I enjoy the freedom of being about to tweet whatever comes in my mind on the day too. Your blog is fantastic, I always enjoy stopping by and reading your posts lovely! Keep up the great work! <3 xx

  19. October 18, 2018 / 3:37 pm

This is all really great advice as we start our blogging journey!

Happy Anniversary! You’ve achieved so much over the last year, you should be so proud! These are great tips – I especially agree with making social media a positive place, I recently unfollowed/muted a lot of people that were extremely negative which made me feel so much better. Being supportive of others is the most important thing I’ve found, it makes such a difference and makes the community a much nicer place!

Happy Blog-versary! One year is a great mile stone worth celebrating. I don’t remember mine! I’ve been blogging on and off since ~2006! It was very different back then. These are some great tips, thabks for sharing. I think taking a break when you need it is very important, especially woth a full time job on top it’s very easy to burn out.

Wow, congratulations on your first year anniversary! I’m actually quite surprised it’s only a year – I’ve been blogging nearly 3 years and I feel like you could teach me so much! You’ve achieved tonnes so quickly and you very much deserve it – you clearly work very hard and you have a real talent. I also think it’s so awesome you’ve said what you have about ‘following rules’. So many people seem to insist that you need to be active on every social media platform constantly and it’s just not possible for most of us. And thank you for reassuring me that taking breaks is okay, and that feeling insecure is normal! Here’s to many more years of HelloBexa! x

Congrats! All your advice is spot on. I wish I had truly known how much work a blog would be. I would have waited until my kids were a bit more self-sufficient. I only have so much time in a day when they are asleep, and by then I’m exhausted! BUT as you said, we meet some awesome people doing this – like you! It’s hard work but also fun if you don’t let it overwhelm you and take breaks as needed.

    I wish you continued success!

  41. October 19, 2018 / 3:49 pm

Fab to read this as our one-year anniversaries are around the same time!
My number one must-do is more interaction – now I that have more time because:
    a) my daughter’s at school &
    b) I have finally finished a major SEO edit…
The numbers are interesting – I have well over 200 posts so far…
    But far less followers!
The lesson, for me? More interaction, more promotion, less posts!
Keep it up, you’re doing an awesome job xxx

    • October 22, 2018 / 6:23 pm

Thank you so much for the kind comment Tracy! That’s great we have similar one year anniversaries and that’s awesome you have more time now too! I’ve recently cut down from 3 posts a week to just twice a week as it was getting too much for me. Interaction is really important, probably more so than new content I think. Glad you enjoyed the post lovely <3 xx

  42. October 19, 2018 / 5:26 pm

    Happy (late) blogaversary!
You’re certainly an inspiration to other bloggers to have created something so amazing in such a short space of time, and you’re one of the kindest bloggers I’ve ever interacted with so you definitely deserve all the success you’ve had in the last year!
This is great advice to everyone, from bloggers who have been established for years and for those who are just starting out. The last two especially speak out to me the most. I think ‘your voice is just as important as anyone else’s’ is going to become my newest mantra.
Congratulations on reaching a year of blogging! Here’s to another year 😊

    • October 22, 2018 / 6:34 pm

Aww thank you so much Kelly! You are so sweet! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post and found yourself a new mantra too. That’s so great to hear! I really appreciate your kind, encouraging and supportive words, thanks again lovely! <3 xx

Major congrats on reaching one year of blogging! This is an amazing milestone and you’ve done so much within the past year. 136 posts is amazing. Definitely better than what I can do, hehe. YESSSS! It is so important to be supportive back. It is kind of sad when bloggers don’t bother taking the time to send the love back to other bloggers. While I understand we all have things to do, don’t expect things to be a one way street in your favor.

Breaks are important. My best way to relax! Comparison is a thing but it shouldn’t be something that gets the best out of us. Keep it up, Bexa. You’re doing great and you have a bright path ahead of you :).

I couldn’t believe that you’ve only blogged for one year! You’re so amazing and has offered so many tips that I thought that you’ve been doing this for years.

if you want to support, be supportive is so true! Communication, supports etc are a two-way thing.

Happy Blogiversry Bexa! As somebody who has recently discovered your blog, I already love it and can’t wait to look back through what I’ve missed in the past year.

These are some great tips. Blogging can feel so completely overwhelming sometimes, especially when you feel nobody notices your blog. I totally agree that if you want support, you need to be supportive. This is something I struggle with sometimes because I just never find the time to read and comment on all of the blogs that I want to, but it’s so important to build up friendships.

Thanks for the tips, looking forward to your next year 🙂

I’m so glad you enjoyed the post lovely, thanks again for your encouraging and supportive words <3 xx

  48. October 21, 2018 / 8:06 am

Huge congrats on your first year of blogging!
I totally agree with you on the ‘want support – give support’. I see so many people nowadays who expect comments/likes/etc, but they don’t give any in return! It’s quite frustrating. I think it’s so important to genuinely support each other and build relationships in the blogging comm!

    • October 23, 2018 / 9:28 am

First of all, happy blogging anniversary! Your blog is so professional looking that anyone wold think you’ve been blogging more than just a year. I agree with all the points you made here, especially the first one. A few years ago I wondered why I wasn’t getting much engagement on my blog and social media, but I wasn’t really interacting with the blogging community by reaching out, following people back and commenting on their blogs. As soon as I upped my own engagement I started to notice a positive reaction and got more support back from others. The blogging world is a very sociable one and you can’t really succeed if you’re not willing to support others. I have met so many amazing people online (including you, Bexa) that I’m so glad I started blogging and never want to stop!

    • October 23, 2018 / 9:38 am

Thank you so much for the sweet comment Nicola, I really appreciate your kind words. That is so true, it is hard to succeed in the blogging world if you are not willing to support others. Keep up the fab work girl <3 xx

I saw you tweet this out the other day, and I honestly couldn’t wait til I could sit down and read it. I’m finally here, and it was well worth the wait. I could not agree more that spreading the positivity & support does absolute wonders; it leaves you feeling good for being generous with your kindness, and that’s enough for me! I would say that I’m still a relatively new reader to your blog, but I have enjoyed following you along thus far; I can’t wait to see what you continue to share, and with that, a huge congratulations from me for hitting this incredible milestone!!!

These are wonderful tips! I have been book blogging since 2012 but last year I moved from Tumblr to self-hosted WordPress and I’ve been writing more about other topics, I feel like I’m almost like a lifestyle blogger now, haha.

Happy Blogversary again Bexa :)) this is such a great post full of really valuable advice. My most favourite was that we don’t need to follow a set of rules. In the beginning, I use to find myself ‘under pressure’ for doing this and that because that’s what bloggers do for example I created a Facebook page because I thought it was a must to get your blog out there but it was just never me! So I said bye bye to it rather than stress over it! Thanks for sharing xx

    • October 30, 2018 / 9:51 am

Thank you so much Soffy! I’m so glad you found the post useful. I was exactly the same with Facebook, I created a page because I thought I needed one, but I haven’t bothered with it since. When it causes us more stress than enjoyment we know it is time to say bye bye! I’m glad I’m not the only one who struggled with it too <3 xx

  72. November 3, 2018 / 1:34 pm

    Lovely post!
What are your tips for getting more personal and opening up to readers on blogs? I’m scared of friends and family seeing, but I want to share some personal stories.

    • November 5, 2018 / 2:05 pm

Thank you Kelsey! Good question! I think it comes with time and getting familiar with being a blogger and sharing your life online. It’s your blog, so you can write whatever you like. I think the more you do it, the easier it becomes. All the best lovely! <3 xx

    Hi Bexa,

I’m a little late to say happy blog birthday, but happy belated!! I’m coming up on a year soon and I almost can’t believe it.

I love your very different, yet very real and important take on surviving the first year blogging. I’ve shared it as well.

I agree completely that being “social” in the blogging world really helps, not only to get shares, but to get support (and give), and to learn from others who get it! Connecting with other bloggers in my niche (travel) and others has been an immense help!

Wishing you an incredible year 2 of blogging 😉.
