5 Ideas For A Digital Detox

Thanks to that iPhone feature, I am now painfully aware of how much time I spend on my phone each week. The results were oftentimes quite shocking, and I’d think to myself, what the heck do I do on social media for allll that time?! Do I really need to check these apps so frequently? So, as a little challenge (I always love a challenge) I wanted to make a conscious effort to spend less time reaching for my phone.

Of course, being a blogger, I wasn’t quite ready to switch off and disappear out of the digital world completely. I mean, the internet is awesome isn’t it, I’m gonna stick around. However, I did want to reduce my screen time, even if it was just taking small regular breaks from technology to do something else.

There are so many things available to us that don’t require WiFi, or a smart phone, or any kinda screen. We just gotta go back to basics. I discovered that the more time I spent ‘disconnected’, the calmer and more peaceful I was feeling. The online world is so fast-paced, ever-changing and attention grabbing; switching off meant that life slowed down, I was in control and I could be more creative with my time.

No matter how advanced technology gets, I will always love the simple pleasure of writing in a pretty notebook. My new favourite thing each evening is to journal. There is something so therapeutic about writing down thoughts and feelings to put everything in perspective. Whatever my worries, jotting them onto paper always makes me feel calmer, and recording all that is good and happy makes me feel positive.

Last week, I shared with you how I spent many hours of the Bank Holiday Weekend painting an abstract paint by numbers cat. It was super relaxing and was a welcome break from technology. Plus, I now have colourful cat painting to be proud of. There are so many ways to be creative without using your phone: cooking, colouring and crafting to name a few! Whatever your passion, switch off for a few hours and enjoy.

Exercise has tons and tons of benefits, you don’t need me to tell you that. It also means you can take a break from staring at the screen and get a change of scenery. You don’t really need an expensive gym membership or fancy yoga pants to reap the benefits either. Going for a walk each day is such a simple and effective way to keep fit and improve mental health (plus the summer is coming so even better!).

I used to tell myself I never had time to read books. But in reality, I never made time to read books. If I could spend hours scrolling social media, then why couldn’t I replace that time with reading a book. Now, each morning, instead of reaching for my phone, I pick up something motivational and read a chapter. As a result, I start my day feeling more positive and inspired instead of allowing Twitter to decide my mood.

I’ve recently read Shine: Rediscovering Your Energy, Happiness and Purpose which I would recommend.

Home Spa.

Creating a home spa (or a luxury bubble bath) is such a blissful way to unwind and escape technology. In my opinion, we should all be visiting our DIY spa regularly, booking ourselves in for a few hours to relax and recharge. Why not treat yourself to a bubble bath, with a few candles, then pop on a face mask and your favourite chilled tunes and let the stress melt away. No phones allowed (unless it’s to listen to Spotify).

I hope this post has given you some ideas and inspired you to treat yourself to regular digital detoxes. Even if you just switch off for an hour each day and do something offline, we can still enjoy the many positive benefits. What is your favourite way to spend your time without technology? Let me know in the comments – I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions! <3

I don’t know whether I like or loathe that iphone screen time feature. I use my phone at work too for social media and WhatsApp as we work across different sites so my usage is always going to be high. Making time to read is something I make an effort to do, every lunchtime I read a physical book or my Kindle. I do need to try to put my phone down more though it’s difficult as a blogger though! Some great tips here Bexa that I’m sure will help!

I’m guilty of reaching for my phone way too often to check social media…but I do research too, so many things to learn about. I have to say, I prefer writing on paper but typing is so much faster. Book, I love hard cover books too. It’s a way to get my eyes out of the digital focus. Take care.

These are some great ideas for time away from your phone. I know that feature is crazy! I can’t believe I am staring at my phone for that long. It’s really quite bad! I like to colour, write, create cards, practise my calligraphy and brush lettering. Like you I always say I have no time to read, but actually if I put my phone down I have plenty of time. I was recently gifted a self-help book that I am now reading which I am looking forward to sharing and I definitely feel calmer and relaxed not being on my phone all the time, rushing to comment etc. Thank you for sharing these ideas Bexa! ❤️Xxx

Some top tips, time away from screens is so important and I’m a massive believer in fresh air & walks and how that improves the mind & soul. It’s too easy to spend hours sitting scrolling, especially on social media & I regularly have to remind myself to do something else. Great post Bexa x

  7. May 16, 2019 / 11:48 am

Couldn’t agree more, Bexa. I spend all day glued to my laptop and most evenings stuck on my phone and sometimes i actually really HATE it. Certainly, my family do. My digital detox day is Sunday, it’s the day I try to spend time outside in the garden, getting my hands muddy. Yes, I can’t move the next day, but I sleep so much better and I feel much happier in myself. Exercise is always a carry forward on my to-do list but as you say, the lighter evenings are here now so I really don’t have an excuse not to go for a little walk. Fab post, really great tips, thank you for sharing – and kudos again on that amazing cat picture! X

Great post – I think a digital detox is so important to have every once in awhile! I think being a blogger makes this more difficult, as I come home from work and then STILL stare at the computer to write posts/comments/etc. However, I am thinking about implementing “no screen weekends” next month to force myself to do more cooking, exercising, and reading without screens bringing me down. Thanks for sharing!

Great post, I think it’s important to have those times where you do something other that doesn’t involve technology! I love those times where I’ve planned to meet up with friends or family and I end up being out and about all day and barely look at my phone, it’s so lovely to experience the world around you <3 Of course, that said, I also love being online and talking to the blogging community!! I'm also a big fan of a home spa, last Sunday I spent the evening having a bath, and then putting a face mask on and it was just super chill!

I’ve spent a lot of the last few weeks reading of an evening before bed, because I’ve ended up working later than usual with additional projects so I’ve been at a computer longer than I wanted to be. It’s meant that I’ve spent the time doing less screen-stuff immediately before bed, which feels pretty positive!

I haven’t drawn in so long though, I need to pick that up again.

I love these suggestions!! Reading is my favourite on this list–I also was shocked at the amount of time I spent on my phone, and I started making changes to that since December. Instead of reaching for my phone when I was a little bored, I grabbed the book I was reading. I love reading, so this just allowed me to do more of the thing I love!

  13. May 17, 2019 / 3:40 pm

These are fabulous ideas and certainly things I enjoy doing when I’m not browsing various sites or refreshing Twitter 😉 I’ve been making an effort to spend less time online as well. Rather than scrolling through social media first thing in the morning and last thing at night, I’ve started reading for half an hour instead. I kept saying I wanted to read more but I “didn’t have time” but it’s clear I was just not using my time in the right way. Doing this has made a big difference to how I feel as I start and end each day in what feels like a much calmer way! Thanks for sharing, Bexa! x

You made such a good point when you mentioned that we tend to say we don’t have time to read books. That’s always my excuse but like you say, how much time we devote to social apps is insane. Making time to read is definitely something I need to do. I made a concerted effort to cut down on my screen time after being informed my screen time was 46 hours one particular week!! I absolutely horrified! I’ve cut it right back now. Definitely an eye opener. Fab post as always x

I loved the idea of this post even before reading it. I took a little break myself this last couple of weeks, only going on social media a couple of times a day mostly to keep up with people I follow. It’s so freeing. I did SO MUCH reading, spent time with my husband who had a few days off, studied for tests with my kids. It was peaceful. I do still struggle to find the balance between ignoring it completely for days and being on it a reasonable amount of time a day — because like you wrote – we are bloggers and we need it. I love your ideas, you really inspire me to go back to creating things again. Great post, Bexa- thank you for sharing this.

I find that logging off and closing the app/tab means that I have consciously log back in if I want to go back on social media – it’s just a little psychological obstacle that means you’re not just faffing around social media because it’s there, but because you actually wanna *be* on social media.

This is a really lovely idea! I have to admit that I’m awful. If I want to really unwind, I have a writing session – that only really works when I can get swept up in it, which means I need to be typing. Or I try and read…but at the moment I’m reading a book from the digital library, so I need my tablet for it. Definitely going to make more of a concerted effort to do some things away from screens for sure. Great post.

I am so guilty of sitting in front of my laptop simultaneously using my phone ipad. I keep thinking of coloring and find myself with so much less time left through out the day. You have shared some nice tips that we all are aware of and just keep ignoring. I need to plan things and do other things like reading and writing too. Thanks for this lovely, motivational and colorful post Bexa. 🙂

One of my favorite things to do outside the internet world is dance! I like turning on my favorite songs and vibe out. Music is so soothing and inspiring🎧 Another way I like to detox is going on nature walks or lounging outside. Being outdoors is so good for the spirit🌿 I wanna start journaling because it’s a type of way to release stress📰I like that you do this at night because it helps you acknowledge the little things in life. Thanks for sharing Bexa!

Great ideas! I remember us looking at your screen time app and it said you’re on your phone like 72 hours a week or something stupid haha! I hate that app but it’s definitely helped! These are great ideas <3
