A Weekend Break: Cardiff

On Friday 21st September, it was Shaun’s birthday and I had a surprise planned. It was a double celebration as Shaun had just completed his first week in his new job so I thought I needed to do something extra special. Inside his birthday card, I had stuck train tickets, we were going to Cardiff for the weekend!

The week before (yes, I am Miss Lastminute.com) I arranged the spontaneous weekend getaway. I searched my trusty friend Google for Short Breaks UK and Cardiff seemed like an ideal location for a change of scene. On Saturday morning, we woke up EARLY and hopped onto the 8:21 train from Romsey to Cardiff Central. It was raining but that wasn’t about to dampen our Welsh adventures…

Okay, it was raining a lot, so as soon as we arrived in Cardiff Central we quickly made an essential purchase and bought emergency umbrellas. As I had no clue where the hotel was at this point, I thought at least being lost with an umbrella would be our most preferable option.

Here is Shaun looking pleased with his new birthday brolly.

Give me coffee and cake over walking around shops any day. Our first stop was Coffee #1 for a Cappuccino Cake and latte. It would have been nice if we ate cake then conveniently arrived at our hotel, but of course nothing is ever that straight forward, ha ha. In actual fact, it took us nearly 2 hours to find the hotel as for some reason I thought I had booked a hotel in Cardiff Bay (a 45 minute walk from the centre, in the rain).

The caption of this photo is: “I’m stressed, but want to take a photo of that seagull”. When we finally arrived at Cardiff Bay, I checked Google Maps (WHY didn’t I do this before whilst in the warm coffee shop) to only then discover the hotel was actually back in the centre of town (45 minutes away, in the rain).

I guess when you have spent hours walking around Cardiff, finally arriving at the hotel is a very happy moment. I had booked the Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel & Spa which is conveniently located in the heart of the town (ha ha). On the positive, we had explored much more of Cardiff than we had anticipated, got a seagull pic and discovered that the bay had some nice looking restaurants for our evening meal.

The hotel was so warm and cosy and we were even offered a free drink at the bar on arrival.

For one night in the hotel, I paid £133 which is pretty reasonable considering the location, it was a Saturday night and you get full access to their spa (sauna, steam, Jacuzzi and pool).

Feeling relieved we had found our hotel and could relax!

Pretty sure we had walked past all the major attractions already.

You know it’s going to be a relaxing stay when your hotel bathroom has an actual bath.

It’s not a birthday without a few balloons, banners, cards and birthday confetti, right?

Feeling refreshed after visiting the spa and ready to brave the rain again for our evening meal…

Back at Cardiff Bay (we got the Queen Street – Cardiff Bay train this time which was only 4 minutes, yay) we picked Bill’s for our evening meal. All the earlier walking had made us absolutely STARVING so we were feeling ready for a big meal with ALL the courses. For starters: I chose crumbed halloumi sticks with lime aioli and Shaun ordered chicken skewers with spicy barbeque glaze, spring onion, lime and tzatziki.

We seemed to stick with the halloumi/chicken theme for our main course too. Mine: Halloumi Burger with tomato hummus, sweet chilli sauce, roasted red peppers, pea shoots, red onion, lime aioli, sesame bun and fries (sweet potato, of course). Shaun’s: Chicken Burger with creamy coleslaw, chipotle mayonnaise, sesame bun and fries.

Fun fact: On our first date Shaun pretended he liked sweet potato fries (because I had them listed as an interest on my dating profile, lol) and only confessed a couple of months later he actually didn’t like them. Thankfully I got over it and we are still together two years later.

Let me introduce you to the Melting Chocolate Bombe. Under it’s chocolate dome hat you have: brownie chunks, chocolate sauce, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, honeycomb and hot salted caramel sauce. YUM!

After our rather filling meal we had a little walk around Cardiff Bay at night all lit up with pretty lights.

Wales Millennium Centre – I was curious what the inscription meant and a quick search tells me: It’s a bilingual inscription in Welsh and English meaning “Creating Truth Like Glass From Inspiration’s Furnace”. There you go, this post isn’t all burgers and brollies ya know.

The next day, we went back to Cardiff Bay to get the Aqua Bus to the seaside town of Penarth.

It’s a small peaceful town by the sea and quite a contrast from the busy Cardiff centre.

You gotta have ice cream when you are by the sea, it’s the rules. After a while chilling by the seaside (in both ways, it was cold but relaxing), we hopped on the train at Penarth to Cardiff Central then switched to our Romsey train and got back in time for the X-Factor.

I hope you enjoyed reading about our Wales adventures. Have you been to Cardiff? Does your boyfriend pretend to like sweet potato fries? Where is your favourite place to go in the UK for a short break? I’d love to hear your recommendations for next time!

Oh, this post did make me laugh, your captions for the seagull pic and the attractions brochures in particular! I think Shaun is very lucky to have such a thoughtful girlfriend, what a wonderful birthday treat to be whisked away for a rainy weekend (JOKE!). Seriously, it looks like you had a wonderful time and Penarth, in particular, looks lovely. Also, that Melting Chocolate Bomb is dessert goals. Belated happy birthday wishes and first week in a new job congrats to Shaun 🙂 xx

Cardiff is one of my favourite cities in the UK – my friend went to uni there and I spent a lot of time visiting her. There’s so many cute tea shops and things dotted around, and I’m such a history nerd I love visiting the castle! It looks like you had such a fun weekend, and the hotel looks absolutely gorgeous. And we’ve all been there, thinking the hotel was in one place when it was actually in another.

I love Cardiff, I went there quite a lot when I was younger as it’s only an hour away from where I live. That hotel looks beautiful, I love the decor in the bar area. The exposed bulb pendant lights are really cool. Your meal looked lovely too, especially the chocolate bombe pudding! Glad you had a good trip.

The hotel looks lovely! Even if it was a bit of a challenge getting there. It sounds like you had an amazing stay. I hope he thoroughly enjoyed his last minute birthday surprise. But the thing I took away from this, the fact he lied about liking sweet potato fries is probably the funniest first date lie story I’ve ever heard x

Your meal at Bills looks incredible, and the hotel looks lovely too. Having a weekend break away is the best, there are so many towns and cities I want to explore!

Aw this is such a cute post! Happy Birthday Shaun! I’ve never been to Cardiff but it looks like you had such a great time (even with the rain and all of the walking) I’ve made that rookie mistake before, when you book a hotel stupidly far to where you actually want to be, but it does look like a gorgeous one! All of the food you had looked amazing too, I love Bills and thats such a cute story about the sweet potato fries!

Looks like you have had a great time away for Shaun’s birthday. I have never been to Cardiff before, but when I was younger there was a chance we may have moved there as my dad got offered a job there but we ended up staying in Bournemouth. I have had a similar chocolate bombe at a Bills restaurant, it’s so good isn’t it! 😃 my favourite place to a mini break is Newton Abbott in Devon, as it’s where I was born and we have family friends there! I love it there 💗xxx

Oh my goodness. Now I feel homesick haha (even though I live in Southampton). I was meant to be moving to Cardiff next week but it sadly didn’t work out and now I’m waiting until next year. It’s definitely my top place to visit, I’ve been twice this year and will go again at Christmas. I hope you enjoyed it there as much as I do! There’s always something new to do, but Cardiff Bay is my absolute favourite place ever. There are so many lovely walks to do too.

Aww looks like you had such a lovely trip! I’ve definitely done the hotel thing before, I have a habit of deciding I can manage without google maps and then epically failing haha. Bill’s is one of my favourite restaurants, they have such good veggie options and the food is always so tasty. My favourite city in the UK for either a day or a full weekend break is Manchester. Perhaps I’m biased as I love to champion the North, but I think it’s such a diverse city and is filled with the most lovely people ever. Thanks for sharing Bexa :))

Really enjoyed this post because I love Wales. The scenery is amazing and the people are great, but whenever I’ve been to Cardiff it’s been raining too! It looks like you had such a great time and I bet Shaun really enjoyed his birthday (minus the walking an hour and a half round trip in the rain to the bay for no reason, lol). The hotel looks lovely – I recently stayed in a Mercure hotel and was really impressed.

Btw, my husband actually DOES like sweet potato fries!

Ooh, you visited Penarth too? Awesome. Most people from Penarth work in the Bay and lots of them walk or cycle because it’s so close.

You didn’t visit the castle though? Next time maybe! 😉

what a lovely post! it sounds like you had a great trip! short break trips are sometimes more enjoyable to me than long vacation, i feel like they are just the right amount of time to give you a bit of a reset. I’ve sadly never been anywhere in the UK since i live in america but Cardiff looks beautiful! im so glad you had a nice time! xx

This post made me laugh so hard, does that make me a terrible person? 🤣

Honestly though, I feel like sometimes these last minute bits of adventure where nothing goes perfectly right are sometimes the most memorable in the long run. Or at least they make for the best stories later on!

I am glad you guys managed to have a bit of fun regardless of the rain and excessive walking tour, it looks like everything else on the trip was quite amazing!

    • September 30, 2018 / 5:07 pm

He he, thanks so much Kristin! 💖 Glad the post made you laugh, looking back on it now it is really funny 😂. It was definitely a memorable trip and would like to go back sometime (when it’s not raining 🙊😜) xx

I had the chance to go on a Spa break as well, but it was a surprise for my birthday, so I didn’t organize anything haha
Just enjoyed the full weekend 😉
We went to Thorpe le Token, and it was a-we-some!

That sounds and looks blissful! I’m so glad you got a weekend to relax and have some fun. My weekend was spent in bed recovering from illness from my darling kids I work with. They decided to spit all over me and got me sick! Not the most fun, but I made it through and am recovering nicely. Hoping for a more relaxing and less snot and sleep filled weekend next time.

    • September 30, 2018 / 6:14 pm

Thank you so much for reading and commenting Tamara! 💖 Aww no, that’s rubbish that you got ill but glad to hear you are recovering nicely! Take care lovely and hope next weekend is better! 😘 xx

We did Cardiff back in 2006, touring all the sites used in Doctor Who and Torchwood, because we’re utter geeks. I’d love to go back and revisit them – and see if Ianto’s shrine is still there (I believe it is.) Incidentally, the lit-up restaurant was one of those sites – it featured in Boom Town.

I mentioned the geek thing, right?

    • October 1, 2018 / 6:08 am

Thanks for the lovely comment Misa! 💖 He he, yes, funnily enough we saw Ianto’s shrine, even though we had no idea who he was, I can confirm that’s it’s there (in Cardiff Bay). That’s interesting about the lit-up restaurant too! Thanks for sharing your knowledge 😘 xx

It looks like a wonderful weekend! I have only been to Cardiff twice, and both times were flying visits with no real time to explore. I shall definitely have to go back again, I think.

    • October 1, 2018 / 6:21 am

Thanks so much Claire! 💖 I’d love to go back again soon too, there is no much to see and do. Glad you enjoyed the post lovely 😘 xx

My favourite place for a short break has got to be Center Parcs or Wales, I haven’t been Cardiff though, I usually go to Snowdonia area, I love it. Cardiff looks so pretty though and even prettier at night! The hotel looks lovely and worth the price!t can be so hard finding hotels can’t it! Those crumbed halloumi sticks sound amazing! Glad you had a nice little break away! xx

    • October 6, 2018 / 4:27 pm

What a lovely weekend! Honestly, I’m jealous that you can just up and take off for a weekend getaway. Do it now while you can for sure! I wouldn’t trade my kiddos for anything, but they do put a damper on last-minute ANYTHING. Great photos, too! Looks gorgeous even in the rain!
